Recently I had the pleasure of hosting an ROI Friends paint out at Denbies Wine Estate, and it turned into one of those wonderfully happy days that reminds you how important it is for artists to spend time painting together. We were incredibly lucky with the weather — at the very least it didn’t rain — and throughout the day artists spread out across the vineyard painting the winding vines, rolling views and changing light across the landscape.
There was such a lovely atmosphere all day. Some people worked quietly on detailed studies while others painted more loosely and instinctively, trying to capture the mood and energy of the place. What I always love about these events is seeing how differently everyone responds to the same landscape.
At the end of the day we all gathered together in the marquee to share work, talk about the paintings and enjoy a well-earned rest after hours spent outside painting. It felt relaxed, supportive and full of enthusiasm — exactly what these paint outs should be.
The ROI Friends group regularly organises painting events like this throughout the year, offering artists the chance to paint together in inspiring locations and meet fellow painters. If you are interested in attending future events, do check out the Royal Institute of Oil Painters website — you do need to be a member of ROI Friends to attend.
